It’s snowing right now, but that’s not the reason school got canceled tomorrow. The -35 degree windchill is the reason school got canceled tomorrow. But this big beige beast you see above started up this morning after being left outside overnight, in the -5 degree cold and snow, got me safely to school, and assuredly shuttled me and some friends to and from a restaurant after a last-minute celebratory swim team dinner. The blowing snow and layer of frozen slush on the road didn’t seem to matter. And one the way back, when I decided to entertain my friends with some snow doughnuts in an empty lot, my car became like a responsible babysitter, politely refusing to break traction and indulge in my hooliganism. For under $10k, I can think of few cars that are so perfect for me to use in the winter. So while, I’ve only known it for about half a year now, I’d like to take a minute to thank my old friend. Not after it’s been totaled in a crash, not just before I sell it, but because I feel like it. Like with people, I want to take the opportunity to say thanks when I can, especially after such a job well done. Want a comfortable winter car that continues to be fantastic year-round? Get a 2001 Audi A8L.

I'm so terrified that my car isn't going to start tomorrow morning.

I have been too. So far, so good though. Knock on wood, and may the gods of German unreliability pass over my garage.

The low tonight here in Madison, without wind chill, is going to be -11. I'm not too worried about my Jeep starting in the morning because it's in the garage.
I'm a director at a tech school with night classes. I'm planning to head in to work in the morning as usual, but we may end up canceling classes. The high tomorrow is supposed to be -5 and it's going to get down to -11 again at night.

It cranked so slowly today, and it was in the 20s. Tomorrow It'll be in the single digits with negative teens windchill. Might have to take the truck..

Hooray for the midwest.

Which wouldn't be such a bad thing, especially w/snow.

Something weird is up with mein auto in these below zero temps. I have to let my car warm up now otherwise it drives funky - as in it doesn't want to accelerate or rev above ~1000rpm for a moment or two while under way.
Kinda sucks... but it does start every time and even did so last year when we had -50 to -55 windchill.

-35? I've been complaining about 20's, not including wind chill. In Texas. Not to mention what this weather does to my car.
Nice A8 by the way, quite a find for under 10K.

Thanks. It was 7k, if you can believe that.
I would love to be in Texas right now.

I always let my ancient engine get its juices going for a minute or two every morning before going ~20mph down my street. You don't want to jackrabbit a motor particularly when it's cold due to oil viscosity; hopefully not a rotary as those need to warm up and cool off!

7K, wow. That's a really good price.
I would rather be in Florida! I just got back from a vacation and going from mid 70's to 30's during the day made me miserable. And to think that's roughly the temperature difference with my current temperature and yours!

Respect to the beige Walrus.

It's going to be 36 tonight here in Florida, and 21 tomorrow night, so we haven't escaped the cold snap.

The walrus? Hmmm, could go with that.

Glad to hear the beast is treating you well.
The one thing I never worry about is my truck starting in the freezing cold. Sumbitch always fires right up.

loving the remote start in my Saab for these chilly days. By the time I get in, the seats are warmed, the air is warmed, and everything is circulating. Just pop him in drive and off I go, plowing new roads.
Not literally as it is higher than my last Saab but still a bit literal as I seek undisturbed lanes for better traction.

Well never mind then! I miss warm weather.

Mmmmm. Autostart sounds nice. We've had a couple cars with it, mine hasn't got it.

And I wish I lived at a higher altitude to enjoy the snow!

I feel the same way about my A4, It's always got my back and doesn't give two shits about the snow and cold. If I want to go anywhere, the A4 will get me there and back without complaint.
Glad you're happy with your A8L! I sure am with my A4.

Audi knows how to make a car for the snow.

And as someone who lived in New York for a long time, you're crazy! Snow can be fun but terrible at the same time.

Lived in Pennsylvania, snow is fun to drive in! That is why I want it.
